Shipwrecked souls would refuse rescue if they washed up at Doune - you’ll find mountain, sea and sky, then simple rooms and lovely food

Read guest comments

You arrive by boat – there's no road in – a ferry across to Knoydart, the last great wilderness in Britain. You'll find mountains, sea and beach – a thrilling landscape of boundless peace and ever-changing light. Guillemots race across the water, dolphins and seals come to play, the Sound of Sleat shoots across to Skye. As for Doune, it's a tiny community of happily shipwrecked souls, who rescued this land from ruin; Martin, Jane and Liz look after you with instinctive generosity. The dining room is the hub, pine-clad from top to toe, with a stove to keep you warm and a couple of fiddles for the odd ceilidh. The food is delicious – crab from the bay, roast lamb from the hill, chocolate tart with homemade ice-cream. Bedrooms along the veranda are delightfully simple; pine-clad with mezzanine bunks for children, hooks for clothes, armchairs for watching the weather; compact shower rooms sparkle. The walking is magnificent, boat trips can be arranged, the night sky will astound you. There's a lodge for groups, too. A very special place, miss it at your peril.

"a wonderful setting, tremendous hospitality, fantastic food, and comfortable rooms. Fabulous! We saw otters only 15 minutes walk away along the coast!"

"Doune absolutely lives up to its description. Arriving by boat at this incredible location is part of the thrill. Then there’s the food: we stayed for three nights and are not by any means a gregarious family so we wondered how sharing a meal round the table with the other visitors would be. In the event it turned out to be one of the highlights, with friendly conversation and any dietary requirements more than met without drawing attention to them. The food is carefully chosen and delicious with plenty of variety. Being fully catered down to the packed lunches means that you can concentrate on getting to know Knoydart (which is suitably rugged - bring good boots even for low level walking). Returning after a long walk in staggering countryside knowing that a lovingly prepared three course meal waits for you is a combination that's hard to beat. The use of the boat to take you out to other locations to walk or see the wildlife is a big bonus and is organised the night before round the table after dinner but you don’t have to walk as group once you’re there. Lots of effort is put into meeting the wishes of as many people as possible, with helpful suggestions when needed. Accommodation is clean and comfortable with good showers. The whole thing sounds a little unlikely but in reality it works brilliantly because the staff are absolutely committed to meeting your needs and creating a special experience for you."
