Near a lively North Wales town, this is the friendliest rural hideaway. Fuel up on fishcakes and home-laid eggs for stunning country walks

Efenechtyd means 'place of the monks' but there's nothing spartan about Dave and Marilyn's handsome brick farmhouse. Breakfasts of local sausages, eggs from their hens, salmon fishcakes with mushrooms and homemade bread are served at a polished table in the dining room with exotic wall hangings from Vietnam and Laos. Light bedrooms have an uncluttered feel, excellent mattresses and good linen; bathrooms are warm as toast. In the pretty cottage garden: a summerhouse and Marilyn's beehive. Motor to Ruthin, with its windy streets and interesting shops, or strike out for Offa's Dyke with a packed lunch; this is stunning countryside.

"A haven of tranquility in the surrounding countryside of birdsong and grazing sheep. Free range hens, a warm welcome, a beautiful comfortable en suite room and a plentiful and delicious breakfast. We would highly recommend this B&B. "

"A perfect haven in North Wales! Mum and I visited old haunts in the region and enjoyed the hospitality of Marilyn and Dave in their beautiful cottage. At night there are fairy lights in the garden and everywhere so quiet apart from the noise of the nearby sheep and cattle. We loved the cottage - the guest accommodation, indeed everywhere is very tastefully decorated and extremely comfortable. No shortage of good places to eat - especially On the Hill in Ruthin. Amazing breakfasts and homemade preserves! Home to return sometime soonish!"

"This gem of a house, sits snugly on the side of a beautiful welsh valley; it has gorgeous walks with far-reaching views straight from its doorstep. But the icing on the cake is the result of all the hard work that has been put in by David and Marilyn. The house is spick and span and full of charm. A perfect English breakfast was served with homemade marmalade and jams watching nuthatches and woodpeckers in the garden. We really liked the ensuite bath and shower which had plenty of space and was spotless. Add in a beautiful garden for a stroll and it makes a perfect place for a peaceful break."

"Our two nights at Plas Efenechtyd Cottage were perfect. Very quiet and remote place with very friendly hosts who give many good hints for discovering North Wales. "

"Here is a real gem tucked into the Welsh hillside .This B and B is well deserving of 4 stars, plus .We felt at ease straight away, with the friendly welcome we were given and our stay proved to be both relaxing and comfortable .We woke up to the smell of home made bread baking and that, together with an excellent cooked breakfast could not have given us a better start to the day. Thanks to Marilyn and Dave "

"I am a fan of Alastair Sawday's books and website and have used his suggestions numerous times to stay in different places. It is always without fail that the places are unique and interesting. Plas Efenechtyd is just one example and I would encourage you to stay here rather than in town especially if you want to have an experience that is unique to the area and probably different from your own way of life. Efenechtyd is a hamlet and vastly different from my life in NYC. "

"The welcome, hospitality and local knowledge of our hosts Dave & Marilyn made our 3 day stay in North Wales so enjoyable despite the intermittent rain. Comfortable bedroom and excellent breakfast. Nearby Ruthin is a gem of a small Welsh hill top town with excellent food shops, a good restaurant and the oldest townhouse in Wales to explore. A really good base to visit many of the points of interest in North Wales. Would certainly recommend for anyone looking for a B&B in the area."

"Found this through your website. Marilyn and Dave just go that extra mile to be perfect hosts! They kindly drove us to the local pub for dinner, as we were travelling on bikes and arrived exhausted. Fantastic rural location, and great breakfast with home baked bread and eggs laid by Dora. Just perfect!"
