The Experience

Layers of history are here. Brantôme has been home to man since prehistoric times; the grand Benedictine abbey, carved out at the bottom of the cliffs, overlooks the ribbon of the river Dronne that slowly rings the town. Just up the road, a perfect distance from the hustle and bustle, is Le Chatenet, a Périgord-style stone house built at the end of the 17th century. Anne and William are super hosts, Anne will show you the sundial they found under the roof marked 1688, William will point the way to the hidden canopy of trees over a path which leads to the centre of town, the abbey and it’s historic caves in a ten-minute stroll. Brantôme’s bell tower is thought to be the oldest in France; they say it must be seen from the inside. There are big bedrooms with stunning fabric on the walls, billiards in the games room, rivers to be canoed and grottoes to be explored. There is even a farm down the street with rabbits, chickens and cows, source of your breakfast eggs and milk. Add an extra day, you won’t regret it.

Reviews

Warm, friendly hosts and a beautiful, comfortable old house with great style. We loved it! Perfect place for spending a few days exploring on our ebikes and returning for a swim. Breakfast on the terrace was sublime. Lovely being in a hamlet with cows and chickens and walnut orchards, yet only a five minute walk down an old track to Brantome.

Yda, Lockerbie

This is a truly delightful, beautifully presented, excellently located place to stay. Wejwere there for just one night whilst travelling through the area but were charmed by the place and by the hosts, William and Jane. The care, quality and attention to detail we found to be quite exceptional.

Malcolm, Ashtead

We stayed for one night on our way further South and promptly booked in for two nights on the way home. It is a little slice of heaven. Simply and utterly fabulous. William and Jane are wonderful hosts and William's cooking is sublime. Le Chatenet is not to be missed and we can't speak highly enough of every aspect of staying here.

Local points of interest from William & Anne

  • Beside the authenticity and the comfort of this 1689 typical Manor House and the facilities of the swimming pool, tennis court, badminton and ping-pong table, in our clubhouse you’ll find everything you need for meals under the shade of the linden trees.
  • You will appreciate walks in our 6 hectares property and can spend time with our 3 goats, Alice , Coco and Caramel and 2 sheep. Noisette and Praline
  • Discover the ultimate beauty of the XIth century church tower and understand the whole spirit of our region by visiting Aubeterre-sur-Dronne, a magnificent troglodyte church. It is an hour of lovely drive down the Dronne river and you’ll pass by Bourdeille
  • Our breakfasts have made our reputation with homemade jams by Anne and a great variety of the best local products, viennoiseries are freshly baked and fruit salad is always a surprise. Breakfasts are 17,00€ per person.
