The Coldstreamer dates from 1895 and stands in the middle of the village. It has one foot in the country and one foot in town – Penzance is a short drive or a good walk. There's a terrace at the front where you can catch the morning sun, a wood-burner in the bar for winter nights. Inside, the colour is red in honour of the Coldstream guards. You can order a pint of Betty Stoggs at the bar, grab the daily papers, browse a collection of Penzance photographs, try your hand at bagatelle. Excellent food – as important as the beer – waits in the snug restaurant (low ceilings, smart colours, exposed stone walls). Meat is from Cornwall, fish landed at Newlyn, vegetables from a local farm shop, so dig into cauliflower soup with truffle oil, seared venison with juniper, fish stew with saffron mash, tarte tatin with bay leaf ice cream.
