More real ale than you can shake a stick at – tour the brewery, then wash down some delicious food with a pint of Hawkshead Bitter

Alex, an erstwhile BBC foreign correspondent, started his brewery in 2002 with little idea of the success he would find. But demand surged, and as Hawkshead Bitter established itself as one of the best pints in the Lakes, the need for greater space prompted a move across the lake to Mill Yard in Staveley (a micro-industrial park in the village). Then Alex developed The Beer Hall, adding food to the menu and now you can sup his ales and enjoy a hearty down-to-earth meal. You'll find the whole Hawkshead range at the bar and a menu that changes daily: stout and oxtail soup, wild local hare stew with dumplings, goat's cheese soufflé, omelette Arnold Bennett – and always, Brewers Lunch: a feast for carnivores. Tours of the brewery are available, and if you like what you drink, you can take some home.
