From the olive bread to the fried squid to the rich-red Porco Rosso ale (brewed below), a young fun pub with something to shout about

Tucked down a side street in an Exeter backwater, opposite warehouses and a ‘pay and display’, the pub holds a smokehouse, a brewery and the smallest commercial distillery in the UK, and the smell of hops and smoke (they brew in the cellar) pulls you inside. The vibe is friendly and fun: there’s fine beer on tap (Mojo Hay, No 38 Summer), Rusty Pig Cider, and a dizzying array of whiskies. You can eat where you want on the best meat, fish and game that Devon can provide; take a look at the chalk boards! This is a wooden floorboards, no-printed-menus place, with a mishmash of tables and a sprinkling of Ikea, and a spillover room with purple and red walls. If beer’s not your thing you’ll love the food: halloumi and mozzarella salad, homemade smoked sausages, linguine with mussels, chocolate torte, Sunday roasts, Saturday brunch.
