The Peat Spade
Village Street, Longstock, Stockbridge, SO20 6DR,
England, United Kingdom
Hampshire is as lovely as any county in England, deeply rural with lanes that snake through verdant countryside. As if to prove the point, the Peat Spade serves up a menu of boundless simplicity and elegance. First there's this dreamy thatched village in the Test valley, then there's the inn itself, always packed to the gunnels with lip-licking locals. Behind the lozenge-paned windows a Roberts radio on the bar brings news of English cricket, gilt mirrors sparkle above smouldering fires, candles illuminate chunky tables, and fishing rods hang from the ceiling. There's a horseshoe bar, two private dining rooms, a roof terrace for summer breakfasts and the food is fabulous – mussels with cider and bacon, stone bass with chilli and crab risotto; sirloin steak with triple-cooked chips and peppercorn sauce.
