Whether you opt for a ploughman’s with Colston Bassett stilton or the full Sunday roast, you’re in for a treat. They’re child-friendly, too

An Elizabethan farmhouse that became an ale house around 1700, and an inn 100 years later. Today it is a deeply civilised pub. The front room exudes country-house charm – fresh flowers, scatter cushions on sofas and settles, crackling logs in Jacobean fireplaces – and you can order a splendid ploughman's with Colston Bassett stilton from the dairy up the road (do visit). In the restaurant, menus change daily, while highlights include pan-fried scallops with Stafford black pudding; locally shot game with seasonal vegetables; delicious Sunday roast beef. Polish off with treacle sponge and butterscotch sauce with brandy butter ice cream. Behind the bar is an impressive range of well-kept real ales, with 60 Corney & Barrow wines (including sparkling and champagne). Outside, a large and attractive beer garden overlooks pretty parkland.

"Think of an idyllic English pub in a quintessential English village with roaring log fires in winter and a large beer garden with croquet and beautiful parkland views in summer - then look no further than Martin's Arms. A varied menu, changed regularly, reflects local passions of huntin', shootin' and fishin' - and having renowned cheese makers in the area is a real bonus. Heavenly."
