At the heart of pretty Cotswold village Milton-under-Wychwood lies The Hare, its stone façade belying its stylish, contemporary interior. Beamed ceilings and exposed stone walls allude to its past, while the marble topped bar and splashes of colour – deep orange curtains, olive green corner seating – bring it forward to the 21st century. An eclectic mix of paintings, gold-framed mirrors and a pair of taxidermied hares are fun, quirky touches. Cosy up by the log burner and sip a pint of Hooky ale while you peruse menus chalked up on blackboards; head chef Matt serves up cracking modern food, with fresh fish the star of the show. Try griddled sardines on sourdough with wild garlic butter, sea bass in a white wine and tomato cream, then espresso crème brûlée and vanilla sugared doughnuts. With stacks of experience between them, you’re in safe hands with landlords Rachel and Sue.
