Wedmore's striking 15th-century coaching inn was lost in another century until Gordon Stevens took over. His vision for the vast stone building has breathed new life into a labyrinth of rooms that ooze character and charm. Wooden floors, half-panelled walls, stone fireplaces, old prints, warm greens and terracottas, wax-encrusted candlesticks on scrubbed dining tables... such is the setting for pints of Potholer and Orchard Pig cider. Food is hearty and locally sourced, and the menu ranges from crab sandwiches and afternoon teacakes with jam (yes!) to rack of Mendip lamb, beef and vegetable stew, and spicy pork curry. There's a cracking locals' bar and skittle alley, and a pizza/pasta restaurant next door (in the bit that dates from 1760).
