Crown & Garter
Great Common, Inkpen, Hungerford, RG17 9QR,
England, United Kingdom
An unreformed country local hidden down lanes beneath Inkpen Beacon, run with passion by Gill and Chris. Gamekeepers and village footballers drop by for London Pride and Good Old Boy, cockerels crow in the fields and in summer life spills onto a stone terrace and a pretty garden. Inside are wooden floors, thick red curtains and a huge settle by the fire. There's a small restaurant serving whole grilled Cornish sole with new potatoes, fillet steak with pepper sauce, and steak and kidney pudding; tuck in here, in the bar, or on the terrace. James II is said to have dropped by, on his way to meet one of his mistresses. Follow a hearty lunch with an invigorating walk up Inkpen Beacon (paths pass by) for glorious views, or try your luck at Newbury Races. Gill and her team are lovely.
