Cosy fireside for winter, lovely garden for summer - this pretty pub suits all seasons, and serves up very special food for the whole family

From its attractive red-tiled roof to its big garden bordered by fields and rolling views, this is a special pub with an intriguing history: Sir Roger Tichborne was exposed as an imposter in 1871. There's no hint of deception now - the pub delivers on its promise of family friendliness, seasonal dishes and bespoke menus. Lofty beams and pale blue décor bring light into the bar and dining room while the terrace has the most English of views across a patchwork of fields where horses graze. The menus make the most of local, fresh ingredients. You might start with potted Selsey crab scented with sherry, mace, nutmeg and dill before tucking into Hungarian chicken supreme with forestiere potatoes. Our summer pudding with Cornish cream was delicious. Stroll by the canal, visit beautiful Petworth House, watch the jousting at Loxwood.
