Be patient as you wind down the narrow, flower-banked lanes. The moment you arrive at this ancient thatched longhouse, in 25 acres of loveliness and peace, stress floats away. The gardens are outstanding, the owners are charming, and your ground-floor cottage is in a side wing, neat and tidy throughout – what more can you ask? You have a big sofa'd sitting room, a decent little kitchen, a bright modern bathroom, two comfy bedrooms with firm pocket-sprung beds and every space brightened with flowers. With their own Dexters, pigs, bees and hens, Jason and Stephen are living the dream – and they're so generous with it: home-grown vegetables in season, and eggs, honey, chutneys and jams. They've also created a special area with deckchairs and barbecue just for you. Dogs will be in heaven so set off from the door and stride the National Park. Go riding on the open moor, or jump in the car to the coast. Take a book to the summerhouse, set off for the pub (four lie within an easy drive) and, as dusk falls, the final treat: watch the third generation of rescued tawny owls gather at the birdtable outside. Bliss.
