Sweep up the drive to a vast house with towering chimneystacks (22 at the last count!). Behind the façade of this romantic and rambling Arts & Crafts manor – recently restored to full glory – you cross the cobbles and spiral up to the tranquil Old Nursery. Sideways sash windows and Pugin shutters hint at its former life, now it is a spacious and stylish apartment, polished and plumped to perfection. Classy flower-strewn sofas rest in a calm uncluttered sitting room and the airy open-plan kitchen holds all you need. At the end of a day’s walking the beautiful Shropshire Hills, retire for a king-size snooze in a bedroom overlooking the paddock of rare-breed sheep. The twin is cosy and child-friendly, the bathrooms gleam. The delightful owners also offer a luxurious cottage in the west wing, and, now, the Gun Room, a new four-poster’d retreat for two. Set in glorious gardens and grounds, close to the Shropshire Way, this is the best kind of country retreat, combining grand architecture with a stunning setting. Stock up for the week – deliciously – in Ludlow, Slow Food capital. Magnificent Ironbridge is close.
