In an ancient hunting hamlet in the heart of the Loire is a generous grouping of dwellings and barns, loved and looked after by a delightful English family. Gill and Phil make pizzas to order, book therapists for massage (and beauty), give everyone a hessian shopping bag stamped with the dates of the markets – clever idea – and organise a big barbecue for summer Sundays; there's no danger of feeling lonely here! The oldest part of the main 'longère' has two entrances, a stone and wood loggia with its original tommette tiles, and a gazebo for outdoor eating. The Grand Grenier, a huge lofty living space on one level, is reached via a honeysuckle'd stair and comes with a decked balcony – sip a glass of wine and watch the sun sink over the fields. The smallest gîte, La Terrasse, has a wood-burning stove. All are fresh, unstuffy, very comfortable and with lovely long views. There's an enclosed heated pool and a paddling pool for tinies, football, volleyball, badminton, boules... morning croissants are a pedal away. For families seeking sociability and the freedom to roam, it doesn't get better than this.
