Atop a hill of lush greenery, this is exquisite. Count Giuseppe Gambaro and his wife Claudia tend the wine and oil production, as the family has done for generations – and the gates are shut at night to prevent wild boar from snaffling them! Now they have two restored houses, Montassiccio and Ticciaia, each on different sides of the estate, 700 metres from the main house and pool. Each holds several apartments, cool, fresh and comfortable with whitewashed walls, tiled floors, traditional country bedspreads and vineyard views – and a private piece of garden. Your hosts are charming and passionate about their wine, and present you with a bottle on arrival. Once a week they take guests round the vineyards and wine-making facilities, rounding off the visit with a glass of Vin Santo and a crunchy cantucci. Claudia is fond of children and often organises races and games. For grown-ups there are cookery and watercolour classes. Sample the creations of a personal chef; eat out in Barberino and San Donato. Or drive the 30 minutes to Florence or Siena. Perfection.
