She is a painter, he is an architect and you couldn’t hope to meet a nicer couple. You go up steps to the B&B, downstairs, via a private gate, to the apartment – an eclectic mix of old and new. The sitting room has an elegant dove-grey sofa and a Corbusier chaise longue, there’s a small dining table tucked into the corner and a romantic bedroom with a muslin-draped bed – white comforter, white shams, white dust ruffle. The bathroom is a delight (terracotta tiles, a big bath, a rose-head shower), and you get a sweet galley kitchen excellently equipped, its fridge filled with delicious produce and wines on arrival. Head off for the heavenly hilltop towns of Assisi, Orvieto, Cortona, Siena, sail on Lake Trasimeno. Return to a lovely shaded dining terrace (all yours) and a delectable pool.
