Since living the dream in the West Country, Jane and Mark have been deeply involved in the sustainable idyll. They've recreated it perfectly here in Spain, among the remote, rolling peaks of the untouched Alora region. This delightful pair have turned a 200-year-old ruined farmhouse into a magical hideaway – soft-hued rooms, staggering setting. As the crow flies it's just five miles from Málaga, but in reality almost an hour's drive, worth every twist and turn. Self-catering it may be, but Jane tempts you with delicious lunches and dinners, or picnic baskets for days out in the mountains. The casitas are uncomplicated and rustic: white walls, wooden beams and pine furniture; each has a roomy living and kitchen area, some a wood-burning stove, all have books, toys and games. Bathrooms are white-tiled and plain. Laze on your private terrace under shady vines; dip in the pool with the house martins. Reed beds, recycling, home-grown veg – the green credentials shine through. Try your hand at mosaic making; if you're lucky, you'll catch the annual jazz workshop. Ask nicely and they may be able to babysit, too.
