Wind your way down the single track where high hedges give way to views of hill and gorse – then down the drive to an attractive 19th-century farmhouse in oodles of farmland. You can glimpse the limestone crag of Hutton Roof, all feels blissfully remote, yet you're a stone's throw from Kirkby Lonsdale. Inside, all has been beautifully and artistically renovated by owner-designer Dorothy. She's kept original beams and oak floors and added a peppering of stunning bits and pieces: a hand-painted clock, a scattering of cushions. It's contemporary, colourful, welcoming and fun – and there's a scrumptious basket of goodies on arrival. Peaceful bedrooms have king-size beds; two are ensuite, one overlooking the cottage garden. The kitchen is in smart Shaker style but if cooking's not your bag, stroll to the pub across the fields, or arrange for a chef to cook for you. Return to a splendidly spacious sitting room with a fire and fluffy rugs; retreat to the snug for some telly. In this sweet unsung corner of Cumbria, you are perfectly placed for family rambles – and some serious hikes.
