A quiet spot among rolling hills with artist Nick, cook Jill, two pointers, an inquisitive cat and roaming chickens. This is a warm, generous household with an easy-going atmosphere: large sofas round a wood-burner, big art and a snooker table. Comfy bedrooms with colourful quilts are downstairs, one opens onto the sunken courtyard. At breakfast you get freshly squeezed juice, homemade preserves, local bacon and just-laid eggs; suppers can be simple or elaborate, or a barbecue in the garden. Explore Dartmoor, walk the coastal paths or head for the beaches; there's plenty of space for your dingy, boards and sandy wetsuits.

"Thanks to Jill and Nick, our gracious hosts for a wonderful stay at High Barn. We really enjoyed the trip, and the opportunity to spend quality time with family, "away from it all". Jill gave us some excellent local hiking routes, and also recommended our round-about tour to Kingsbridge, Slapton Sands, Dartmouth and Totnes - a perfect day out. High Barn is a truly wonderful escape - it's beautifully appointed and very comfortable with terrific breakfasts and teas! "It's hard to imagine a more hospitable welcome than the one I received as a single traveller at High Barn. My host, Nick greeted me with tea and delicious lemon syrup cake, my pied a terre room was cosy, charming and decked with Nick's splendid art and every mod. Con; and the breakfasts each morning were simply outstanding: fresh food, superbly cooked and Beautifully presented by a real cook who was also a great conversationalist and charming hostess - Jill.Raspberries from the garden, home made marmalade and jam, fresh flowers on pretty cloths just made it even more quintessentially English."

"Not your typical B&B. Jill and Nick are friendly and welcoming, with nothing too much trouble. Because of their dogs, they know all the good walks and pubs in the area. Breakfasts are huge, with local eggs and bacon. We were given a big bedroom at the end of the house, with a large ensuite bathroom. Huge paintings are hung everywhere. Great fun, despite the weather, and worth a second visit in the summer."

"Lovely accommodation with the ensuite. Beautiful gardens and house. Great breakfasts with fresh eggs from the chickens! Gorgeous Banthan Beach not far way and lots of lovely local pubs. Great place to stay, highly recommended."
