The Old Shippon, Beara Farmhouse

In a quiet corner of Devon, Ann and Richard have realised what most can only dream of: a self-sufficient smallholding and blissful retreat. Fat kune kune pigs, busy hens, geese and the odd cat are the first to greet you, closely followed by your warm lovely hosts. Richard is a master woodsman and recycler; Ann is the creative eye. Slowly they turned a 17th-century barn stitched to their farmhouse into a civilised yet rustic holiday home – with a wonderful view from the retro Knole sofa. Slip through a little blue door to enter an upside-down world. Two cosy bedrooms, well-crafted and waxed, peek out over a sunny terrace to the hills; up the wooden stairs is a big light-drenched space with high windows for more views. Ann's art and Richard's farm treasures are dotted about; tucked into a corner is a vast wood-burner. A hefty run of granite and a Belfast sink line the open country kitchen allowing cooks room to concoct. Before slowing to a standstill, tick off the coastal path round Hartland Point, stroll through RHS Rosemoor, brave the boat to Lundy. A place to fall in love with, and live a little of the dream.
