A treasure trove of Dorset history: period antiques, fine silks, silver, landscaped gardens - and wonderful dinners with down-to-earth Suzie

Don't be daunted when this magnificent manor house swings into view: it's grand, gracious, filled with flowers... and Suzie is lovely. The house breathes 500 years of history – there's a fine artefact or period feature at every turn, from white hounds in the courtyard entrance to silver tureens in the handsome dining room. Bedrooms are in the east wing, one a vision of yellow silk and antiques, the other a raftered Art Deco dream with stained-glass windows and furniture from the Queen Mary Liner. Formal gardens envelop the house – a maze of balustrades, finials, statues and steps, with stunning views to the Jurassic coast. Unique!

"My wife and I have just enjoyed a long weekend at Waddon House and we had a fabulous time. It is a very comfortable house indeed and Suzie is a delightful hostess. The setting is magnificent with excellent walking right on the doorstep. East access to local pubs for dinner. Highly recommended, really lovely destination."

"We have just had a fantastic weekend at Waddon House. It's a very beautiful manor house, but also very comfortable and cosy. We stayed in the Zeals Suite which is stunning with a four poster bed, yellow silk drapery and antique furniture, but not in any way overly formal. The large bathroom had an enormous bath, separate shower and warm fluffy towels. And there is also a large comfortable sitting room for the guests, which you share with only one other room. The house is fascinating, with an amazing sense of history having been in the family for 100s of years. It's a couple of miles inland from Chesil Beach and has sweeping views down to the sea. And the countryside is stunning - the best of English rolling hills, valleys and seaside. Suzie has thought of all the details down to cotton wool buds in the bathroom, a wide range of toiletries, dressing gowns and a delicious afternoon tea on arrival for road-frazzled guests. She is charming, friendly and full of information on good local restaurants and places to visit. All in all it's like staying in a truly luxurious hotel but with real personal attention and masses of space. It's like having your own wing rather than your own room. We would definitely recommend it and look forward to spending another, hopefully longer weekend."
