The Experience

A pretty coaching inn, The Fleece has not long been refurbished and the bar, lounge and restaurant are all scrubbed up and glowing. Open all day it has a good buzz. Drop by for coffee and egg on toast; choose a sharing platter at lunchtime with a pint of Thwaites. There are daily specials and Sunday roasts and the staff are charming, cheerful and smartly turned out.

The more spacious rooms, with their beamy, up-in-the-roof feeling are the best, but all are smart with new beds and jazzy wallpapers. Face the famous market square and watch the world go by or settle more quietly into a room at the back.

Set off into the Cotswolds for a hike with the dog, browse the antique shops then come back to the Fleece for the night – ask about parking before you arrive, and make sure you’ve booked for dinner; it can get busy.

Reviews

Fabulous place, very clean, great bar and food. Extremely friendly staff. Located on the Market Square, walk out the door and in the vibrant shopping area. Dogs welcome in bar areas. Very nice couple of days

Erica, Wellesbourne

Right at the heart of Cirencester's pretty market town, the Fleece is abuzz with colour and country charm. Whether you've popped in for a coffee or a feast with the family, there's a comfortable corner where you can settle or spread out. The feature rooms are a delight, ask for Number One with its fabulous wallpaper, or opt for one of the big rooms with the super-sized bathrooms. A real treat.

Sarah, Bristol

My husband and I had a very enjoyable short break at The Fleece in September and found the staff helpful, polite and friendly at all times. The breakfasts were delicious and a pleasant start to the day. We stayed in a character room which was warm and comfortable. We were not aware that as guests we had to book a table in the restaurant on the Saturday evening, therefore had to be squashed into a small table opposite the bar which I found noisy, however the food was enjoyable and plentiful. We would definitely recommend The Fleece to others when visiting this wonderful Cotswold town.

Location

The neighbourhood

Cirencester is a pretty Cotswold market town awash with cafes, good places to eat and independent shops. Browse away an afternoon on Black Jack Street and the Brewery Arts Centre. The Church of St John Baptist is one of the finest 'wool' churches in The Cotswolds, funded by wool merchants it dates from around 1115 and has wonderful gothic flourishes and towering spires. Behind it lies the Abbey Grounds, once home to an Augustinian monastery.

  • We have a wide range of independent shops and a lively market square on our doorstep; perfect for retail therapy.

  • In March each year thousands flock to nearby Cheltenham to try their luck at the first-class racecourse during the Cheltenham Festival.
