The distant whinny of a horse, the hoot of an owl, the smack of leather on willow – this is as traditional as it gets, but now with a bang up-to-date, swish spa. Sweep through the graceful Georgian portico into the sunshiney hall for Regency-striped sofas, tea by the fire and country-house living at its English best. Deep sash windows gaze onto 30 acres of parkland, lawns and aromatic gardens (bliss for a summer wedding); after a spot of tennis or a round of clock golf, retire to the dining room for ballotine of poussin, a brandy at the bar and a sumptuous bed. There are apples in the orchard, artichokes in the kitchen garden, over 50 different types of mint and they smoke their own fish. Food and wines are taken seriously here and there are cookery days to enjoy. Bedrooms in the house have floral drapes and bedspreads, a sofa to sink into, pot pourri from the garden, a bathroom filled with towels; those in the converted stables are more contemporary. Cheerful, involved staff are the icing on the cake and the Queen is down the road: pop in to Sandringham on your way home and experience one more immaculate retreat.
