Marquess House
6A Church Walk, Aldeburgh,
Suffolk
England,
United Kingdom
The Marquess of Salisbury built this handsome Victorian brick home for his silver collection. Find it off Church Walk, half-hidden by flowers, wind chimes and trees, in arty Aldeburgh, at the heart of all that is gentle and good: pubs serving great food and local ale, the Snape Maltings concert hall, two RSPB reserves... oh! and as the gulls remind you, the beach. There's a fresh, summery, nautical feel to the high-ceilinged sitting room with its stripy blue sofas, wooden floors and oil-painted seascapes, and wintertime cosiness from the log-burner. The kitchen is superb, all flagstones, black granite, sleek appliances. Lovely to watch the sun sink over evening drinks in the big front garden – protected by hedges, lit by a ship's lantern – or retreat to the sweet summer house with a book. Bedrooms stack upwards, Laura Ashley-smart with cream carpets, crisp linen, patterned blinds at sash windows. The big private twin, up in the eaves with a view of the church, has an en suite bathroom with a stylish roll top beneath a sloping velux window – your chance to bathe under the stars!
