Seeking sea air, beer guru Mark and wife Sophie are doing wonders at this well-loved pub. To the sound of the sea crashing on the beach beyond, the vast lawn hosts summer soirées and barbecues, and the wild flower meadow is perfect for picnics. Inside, sand, stone and aqua tones are redolent of the ocean and open skies and add a contemporary touch, while Sophie's menus overflow with produce sourced from a rich vein of organic farms and top local butchers. Fresh food is definitely on the menu; the allotment at the back has doubled in size. Their "Extra Special" wine list is very impressive and seasonal food is matched to beer and wine: try game terrine with Flying Dog IPA or roast cod, lentils and chorizo with a glass of Pouilly Fumé. Tempura rock oysters with a draught wheat beer are a summer treat, out on the sun terrace overlooking allotments, beach huts and distant sea. Verdant borders festooned with beach-loving plants front the six spruced up chalet rooms. Now cedar-clad, they have smart new bathrooms, comfortable beds and soft Farrow & Ball hues; three have terraces for savouring the sunrise. Dogs are welcome too.
