Special Places to Stay - More than a bed for the night

Jacquie's eye for interior design has recently turned the Pheasant into a small-scale pleasure dome. It sits above the village pond with a terrace for drinks in the sun, but the drawing room is utterly gorgeous, so you may well choose to hole up inside. You'll find elegant sofas, walls of books, an open fire, flowers everywhere. Cool, earthy tones run throughout, there's a smart bar, padded window seats, candles flickering at night. Outside, a converted stone barn is home to a pretty swimming pool and you can potter across in bathrobes for a dip. Beautiful bedrooms are scattered about. There's a suite in the garden with a decked terrace, then a couple of lovely family rooms with bunk beds for kids. Those in the main house are no less beautiful: cool colours, chic fabrics, the odd four-poster, padded bedheads. Best of all is the food, perhaps hand-dived scallops with Yorkshire rhubarb, roasted wood pigeon with wild garlic risotto, lime tart with banana sorbet. Castle Howard for Brideshead fans and the Moors for walkers both wait. You can self-cater in three gorgeous cottages, too.
