The Great Hay Barn

Age and modernity meld to stunning effect in this former Cistercian monastic grange, a trio of centuries-old buildings restored in exemplary fashion. The Great Hay Barn is the largest and from its handsome stone and wood façade you can spy the church steeple at Hay peeking out from trees just across the river. Inside, a wonderfully light living area expands outwards and upwards over three levels to a soaring ceiling of huge twisted oak beams. Glass doors allow sunlight to flood in and you to spill out to the huge lawn. On wintry days, snuggle by the wood-burner or on the mezzanine gallery's comfy sofas, where you'll find welsh blankets, a library of books and a home cinema system. A smart dining room on the lower level can seat 24 with ease, but it's also fun to gather for meals around the breakfast bar or long wooden table in the gleaming, top-of-the-range kitchen. A terrace opens out from here with spectacular views of the Wye valley and Black Mountains. When night's silence falls, disperse to bedrooms over three floors, all calm, generous, uncluttered spaces with beds dressed in the crispest white cotton. A gentle walk takes you to Hay-on-Wye's bookshops and tea rooms; more vigorous hiking, horse riding or mountain bike trails lead through the nearby Brecon Beacons. A glorious setting for a wonderful property.
