Special Places to Stay - More than a bed for the night

'Kabarole' is a Ugandan invitation to 'come and see' what this dramatic old barn is about. Discover sweeping terracotta tiles, a striking terrace that runs the length of the building, a pool and barbecue hewn into the hillside. Raids on the vegetable patch begin and end here, dining al fresco on your green-gotten gains. Sheep graze beyond the meadows, in full view of the family's château-manoir home (filled with stone staircases, monumental rooms and, some say, a secret passage to perfect Siorac and its medieval church). All this is rivalled by Kabarole's own offerings. Twin beds are tucked into the attic; downstairs bedrooms reach up to lofty chestnut and oak-beamed ceilings; there are lime-rendered walls and mushroom-pink terracotta floors. With enough room for a celebratory dance around Ugandan chairs, nothing stands in your way to the generous, wood-columned bathroom. The living area arranges itself round a limestone chimneypiece, a relaxed dining area set behind, and a modern white-on-white kitchen to the side. Wonderful spaces, timbers, fittings – and great for families.
