This place oozes authenticity – and peace. Four centuries old, the gîte at Quengo takes up two floors of the old coach house and feeds into the stables – now a games room – complete with original wood panelling and wrought-iron hayracks. The upstairs was used for drying hemp... you can still see the holes for the hanging poles in the trusses. Step into an open-plan living space with fantastic beams above and sofas and easy chairs below, an old trunk for a coffee table, a piano to play, horse prints on the walls, small lamps for atmosphere, a cupboard on the landing for books and games. Even the fire is laid ready for you, and the logs are on the house. Up the stairs are patterned duvets on comfy beds and wooden floors warmed by big rugs, masses of storage, big bathrooms and two sloping ceilings. Families will adore the outdoor space and the swings, the friendly Leonberg mountain dog, the organic potager, the restaurant you can walk to and the owners who greet you like long lost friends. A deeply eco-friendly place, and with a lovely garden.
