Special Places to Stay - More than a bed for the night

In lovely old Calvisson, Rue Baratier's three storeys have been restored to reveal old beams, terracotta tiles and honey-coloured stone. The palette is stylish creams, greys and whites, there are linen curtains and period antiques. From the front door a stone staircase invites you up to light, open-plan living, a broad, well-equipped kitchen space, a contemporary dining table with upholstered benches, a salon with a winter-welcome fireplace. And through to an outdoor courtyard with a bubbling water basin, just about big enough to whip up a sociable barbie. Up again to bedrooms: the first with a king-size bed, an antique wardrobe and a chaise longue, the second smaller and intimate; both peaceful. Chic en suite bathrooms have large showers with pebble floors. This is a grown-ups-only house – watch the steepish stairs – and a perfect place for exploring the Gallo-Roman south, the horsey Camargue and the glittering Med, 20 minutes away; wheel a bike out from the garage for some leisurely exploring. Calvisson's Sunday market has flowers and artisanery – and an excellent caterer for no-cooking-please days.
