Within exploring distance of Strasbourg, Nancy and Metz, the château has more than a whiff of history. It was built for one of Napoleon's generals and the two paintings that hang in the Louis XVI salon were gifts from the Emperor. David's family has farmed here for five generations; now he and his wife welcome guests with huge kindness and eco-awareness. Bedrooms are authentically French and solidly traditional, with carved armoires, Voltaire armchairs, perhaps a draped bedhead or a small chandelier. Parkland views float in through the windows and bathrooms have recently been updated. Downstairs is more stylish: a library/billiard room, a many-windowed salon hung with portraits, a majestic dining room where splendid candlelit dinners are served several nights a week in the company of your lively, attentive hosts (book ahead). Laze on the terrace at the back, as you watch the children play; it's great for families. Or pull on your hiking boots and follow your nose through the woods and round the ponds. Agnieszka fills the place with children and flowers. It's homely, well priced and definitely special.

"Fascinating castle, wonderful accommodation, lively and attentive hosts. Great for staying with families as there is a big garden, and the children can go to bed while the grown ups enjoy dinner downstairs. Lovely breakfasts. Ask for a tour - there's a lot of history here. Would love to stay again."

"Our ground floor bedroom was beautiful. We shared a delightful wild boar dinner with David, four South Africans, two Germans and two Dutch. It was hilarious and great company. DAVID AND THE TWO DAUGHTERS WERE EXCELLENT HOST AND HOSTESSES"

"My wife and I and our grown-up daughter had a lovely stay here for 7 nights in September. We would happily endorse the description on the Sawday site and also the earlier two reviews. To add a couple of other points: David is an absolutely charming host, who works hard to involve all his guests in the conversation - this is quite a challenge given the wide range of languages spoken! The area is quiet and beautiful countryside with excellent walking (David can provide maps and advice) and quite a lot of historical interest. We found plenty to do for a week, including day trips to Metz, Nancy and Strasbourg. Many people only stay for a day or two en route to and from the Channel ports, but the area deserves more time. The chateau is a fine historical building, well equipped and traditionally furnished. Everything works, just don't expect clinical efficiency - people who demand that should stay at a motel, and they'll miss out on the joys of being part of the family in such a lovely setting."
