Up and up the long, sinuous, narrow country lane… to discover a pocketful of houses, a big ancient manoir, and views that sail over villages and valleys as far as the eye can see; the panorama is astounding. Inside is enticingly comfy – and homely, in spite of the impressive dimensions. Staircases are wide and extend over two floors. You get a big well-equipped kitchen downstairs with a chequerboard floor, a Tudor-style dining room with a tapestry and a solid oak table, a big beamed and sofa'd sitting room with a wood-burner, and a fun 'snug' on the landing – table football, TV, sofa, and a hammock slung from the beams. There are seven bedrooms, three bathrooms and each and every one is different: a magnificent carved four-poster here, exposed stonework there, a grand armoire, a bright zig-zag duvet, and fabulous vaulted caves. It's tailormade for families and perfect for summer, with parkland to roam and garden steps (steep) down to terraces and saltwater pool. As for the area of Quercy (distinguished by the river Lot), it's foodie heaven, rich in restaurants, auberges and markets glistening with produce.
