Seasonal fruits in the hamper, Roman ruins all over the place,heavenly views from wherever you stand. Welcome to a fabulous house built into the hillside in the park of Campo Soriano. The once-derelict farmhouse, surrounded by figs, lemons, lavender and 400 olive trees, has been revived by its English owner – beautifully. Inside all is fresh, uncluttered and Italian, with terracotta floors and soft colours and walls a metre thick (keeping you cool in summer). The bedrooms are delightful, the bathrooms are en suite and the kitchen, rustic-contemporary and very well equipped, opens to the terraced gardens; help yourself to herbs. Further provisions are a 15-minute drive away, in the wonderful market at Terracina; you're close to a good supermarket, too. Bliss to dine on the terrace, in the shade of the olive tree by day, under the stars by night. History buffs can visit the Cistercian Abbey at Fossanova – a must-see – while families will head off for the beaches at Sperlonga (itself enchanting) and Sabaudia; the house information booklet is a boon. Then there's Pompeii, Naples, Rome… a treat.
