Down the steep winding road from Montelparo – with a thrilling final lap to the house – is a haven of birdsong and tranquillity. There's an apartment upstairs, occupied in holiday times by the owners (charming, English, happy to provide occasional meals), a further apartment on the ground floor, and wonderful valley-of-vineyards views. White walls, terracotta tiles and freshly treated beams give interiors a refreshing feel – expect great comfort here. There are beautiful bathrooms and a super-duper kitchen, a dining table crafted from ash, a cream sofa topped with stylish cushions, and fine new wrought-iron beds. Whisk the children off to the sea (unspoilt Altidona) or visit one of Italy's loveliest cities, Ascoli Piceno, a half-hour drive. Or arrange a wine-tasting with a recommended grower, followed by a full-blown Marchegiano lunch cooked by his mother – fabulous!
