Castello di Tagliolo

Italy
The low beams and the warm walls entice you in, demand you unpack and make this captivating place your home. The castle, part of a medieval borgo, has been in the family since 1498; from the windy cobblestone paths to the 900-year-old church the place oozes history. And it's a very peaceful, very safe place for young families to stay, with child-friendly gardens below. The apartments, neither huge nor hugely luxurious, have heaps of charm. Thick walls are painted the family's trademark ochre and terracotta, sweet flowery duvets cover down comforters, wardrobes are antique, Grandpa's sketches are lovingly framed, showers are spacious. You can use the communal oven in the garden, or rustle up a meal in your own decent-sized kitchen in the corner; expect antique marble sinks with cute curtains hiding cupboard space below, cheery oil cloths covering tables and copper pots adorning walls. A Swedish housekeeper shows you the ropes and settles you in. This is arguably Italy's best wine region so book up wine tastings at the family's cantina or head to Asti for a nice glass of bubbly.
