A ten-minute bus ride from the main station, in a peaceful side street looking down on the city, is a small friendly guest house behind locked gates, owned by charming Tiziana. She and Ruggero live close by and come in to prepare breakfast each day – a big generous spread laid out on a polished bench-table – and to catch up with their guests. The villa – not so long ago used by the Uffizi to restore works of art – has been cosily and handsomely furnished. A landscape designer with a love of gardens, Tiziana has named the bedrooms after plants. There's spacious Gingko for families, with a wrought-iron four-poster and orange taffeta curtains; bright light Primula, with plush pretty bedspreads; and Rosa, Clematis and sweet Salvia, these three sharing a big bathroom (bathrobes are provided). Find new polished floor boards and lovely old terracotta tiles, wooden carvings by an artist from Mugello, and everything spotless and gleaming. There are books and guidebooks for the borrowing, you're a 20-minute walk into the centre of the city, and the WiFi is fast and free.
