The Experience

Exemplary! Where: in a lovely, comfortable, refurbed Georgian house 20 minutes’ walk from Cambridge centre. How: with warmth, pleasure, intelligence and local knowledge. Bedrooms have good quality mattresses, bedding and towels. Characterful pieces too – antique brass bed, freestanding bath, oriental rugs on polished floors – with flowers and garden views. The breakfasts are delicious, largely organic and local: fresh fruit salad, kedgeree with smoked Norfolk haddock, home baking (three types of bread; gluten free, no problem). If you’d like to swing a cat book the biggest room; borrow vintage bikes and thoroughly enjoy your break.

Reviews

Lovely old house with modern comforts, we were short of nothing we needed. Extremely comfortable bed with quality bed linen. Excellent breakfasts. Easy parking and a pleasant walk by the river into Cambridge centre, with a short taxi ride as an alternative. Christine was efficient from beginning to end.

Philip, La Rochelle

A lovely place, a warm welcome, very well appointed bedroom and bathroom, with an excellent pub nearby and cafes a short distance. Fifteen or so minute walk to the River Cam, with parks, boathouses etc.

Steve, Petersfield

We stayed for 2 nights in mid-February 2022. Christine welcomed us with tea and scones; gave us helpful advice about walking in to Cambridge and places to eat. On the first evening we walked to The Haymakers, for pizza. Next day, we walked into Cambridge (about 20 mins) for the galleries and the Botanic Garden. The house is clean and interesting, and even though the wind was high, the bed was warm and comfortable. The good en-suite has an interesting shower design. Christine cooked us excellent breakfasts. We parked just along the road, and that was easy to do. We would be happy to stay again.

Keith, Kinver, Stourbridge

Christine obviously enjoys what she does, and runs her lovingly cared-for B&B with dedication and a meticulous attention to small detail as well as to the bigger picture. Greeting her guests with old-fashioned courtesy, she leads you upstairs to rooms which are both charming and homely. Country-cottage in style, each of the three bedrooms offers simple but elegant accommodation. Home-made biscuits complete the picture and everything is spotlessly clean. Christine takes great care over her breakfasts and her artisanal scrambled eggs are a treat. The road is quiet and there is parking outside.

We had 2 very comfortable nights at 5 Chapel Street. Christine our hostess was kind, welcoming and attentive and ensured our every need was met. The breakfasts were wonderful with a wide selection of tempting dishes and home-based bread. The house is located on a quiet street within easy walking distance of the river and colleges. We will definitely return.

Marie, Sheffield

we promised to return again and we have now done so. The hospitality, ambience and comfort are as excellent as ever.

Heather, Maidstone

Perfect friendly B&B in easy walking distance from the City centre with option of bus. Lovely, well- appointed and very comfortable ensuite bedroom. Superb breakfasts. Christine is a wonderful hostess and willingly provides information about what to see and do in Cambridge. A very Special Place. Will definitely return.

Heather, Maidstone

My daughter and I loved our stay and Christine could not have been a better host. The rooms were spotless, comfortable, charming and breakfasts quite delicious.

Emma, Malton

Very prompt response to our initial enquiry. Free parking right outside the door. Friendly welcome with tea and cakes. Lovely large, comfortable room with generous bathroom. Lots of local advice about walking routes, eateries etc. Overall a very pleasant stay in an ideal B&B and we would certainly stay again when in Cambridge.

My husband and I choose B&Bs over hotels for the personal touches that put us at home in a new place. Christine is a master of those special touches! From the delicious homemade ginger biscuits and tea in our room to the detailed directions of how to walk into town, from my husband's full English breakfast to my homemade Mueslix and fresh fruit, each detail was perfectly executed. When we mentioned that we might be interested in punting, for example, Christine made a point of calling a specific company she knew through a friend and getting all the details for us. This is what a B&B should be!

At the end of a long day's travel it was very pleasant to find a friendly thoughtful welcome into a delightful house. Room fitout was attractive. Bathroom capacious and spacious tub but unfortunately not a lot of time in our itinerary for a long wallow. Convenient walking distance into Cambridge. Handy pub nearby in the evening for pub pizza and ales. Will stay there again when next in Cambridge.

Local points of interest from Christine Ulyyan

  • We are located within the heart of the old village of Chesterton, now absorbed into Cambridge but this conservation area still retains the relative tranquility of village life while being a 30 minute stroll or a short bus ride into town.
  • Round the corner there is a friendly local pub called the Haymakers, serving good local beer and excellent pizza (the chef is Italian and he has a proper pizza oven).
  • There is a fabulous cafe 5-10 minutes walk away called Stir. A real boon to our local community and offering a warm welcome and great quality food and drink - the baking is particularly good.
  • We are north-east of Cambridge city centre, so ideally situated to explore lovely Ely and its amazing cathedral, Oliver Cromwells House and Peacocks, one of the best teashops in the county.
  • The Norfolk coast is also accessible from here and makes a nice day trip, likewise parts of Suffolk such as Bury St Edmunds or a day at the races in Newmarket!
