If you're looking for a small comfortable perch in the Serra da Lousã, head here. In a newly restored building in the centre of town, on a corner with lots of windows, is an apartment above and offices below – plus covered internal parking (a boon) and a simple furnished patio near the bays. The kitchen is well-equipped with a quasi-country feel, bedrooms have fans and the bathroom is lovely with plants, tub, shower and an old dresser that Carlos, the friendly owner/builder, restored to take a basin. Floors are new pine made to look antique, paintwork is distressed, tiles are pristine, walls are yellows and blues, and all feels light, airy, friendly and cute. The town is big enough to house bars, restaurants and cafés, there's a castle with a natural swimming pool and the wonderful Serra da Lousã is on the doorstep. Sites of special beauty include the Mata do Sobral and the São João valley: pull on your hiking boots! Note too the river beach at Gois, the Roman ruins at Conimbriga, and the historic university town of Coimbra – you can see them all in a day.
