Lie in the lap of Douro luxury. Delicious big beds, thick fluffy towels, generous hosts, happy staff, a dining terrace with a panorama... and Molly, the mascot bulldog, never short of a cuddle. Kurt and Ursula's home is a classic manor house on the edge of a hillside village, with vine-covered terraces to one side and stunning views over valley and river. Wide granite steps lead down to a huge pool with a long-roofed cabana furnished with sofa, music and tables; there are wrought-iron sunbeds with plump cushions, a sauna in a port barrel (wonderful), metal racehorses on the lawn, lush flowers, an outdoor jacuzzi. All is tasteful, stylish, informal yet not over-casual. Indoors, strong warm colours are set off by terracotta, granite and slate and an inviting mix of contemporary and antique. Bedrooms are a very good size; one is on two floors, ideal for a family; all have delightful bathrooms and hand-painted furniture. Ursula, who loves to bring people together, may join you at dinner; the food is a treat. All this and masses to do: ping-pong, tennis, squash, billiards and boules here, hiking and biking beyond.
