An avenue of pines leads to this peaceful place in the undiscovered hills of the northern Algarve – but close enough to raid the bustling southern coast and the surfing beaches of the west. It's just the place for a family, or two. You are independent here but John and Cherry are happy to call in every so often with supplies of eggs, wine and honey if you wish. They lived here until moving to a house nearby and the rooms still bear the warmth and friendliness of their personalities; find soft lighting, wood-burning stoves, deep armchairs, bamboo ceilings, a luxurious Dutch-fitted kitchen. Linked by a long and lovely veranda, Casa Limão, the charming smaller studio, makes the place perfect for one big party. Both houses have breakfast terraces with views, over the pool or the small reservoir stocked with koi, while spread out below the old winery are its vineyards: do sample John's vintages, they are excellent. It's a deliciously quiet and private place and the magnificent pool leads to your own covered bar with hammocks – a lovely breezy spot from which to gaze across to the shimmering hills.
