Not only is the house light, bright, well-designed and south-facing, it has a huge view over village and valley, and is a short hop from the coast and prized beaches. Set on a steep hillside, separated from others by carob and olive trees, the house is graced with numerous steps and terraces, each dotted with bougainvillea, lemon, yucca, small palms and bright annuals. In summer you'll be spending your days outside, on the cobbled barbecue terrace under the old olive tree or in the saltwater pool – fabulous. Inside is a large split-level, open-plan space divided into three: modern kitchen, dining room with big table and comfortable sitting room. Bedrooms are arranged in two wings, family-style: expect modern metal beds in most rooms, mirror-clad fitted wardrobes, white bathrooms with bright hand-painted tiles. Choose between the snazzy resorts to the west – Vilamoura, Vale do Lobo, Quinta do Lago – and the lesser known beaches to the east, and don't miss the flamingo island of Tavira. An illuminated pool, secure parking, satellite TV, WiFi and wood-burner complete the villa-perfect picture.
