Los Piedaos
Las Barreras, 18400 Órgiva,

Andalusia,
Spain
At the end of the long winding track, on a tree-covered ridge beneath the soaring Sierra Nevada, the multi-levelled farmstead has been renovated by its architect owner with shade, privacy and huge views in mind. Each white casita has old tiles and timbers, recycled shutters and doors and a colourful hotch-potch of terraces and furnishings: convivial dining tables, throws over sofas, simple bedrooms and bathrooms and plenty of novels. Both the owners and delightful managers Arpy and Fred care deeply about the environment; roofs are painted white to reflect sunlight, grey water is channelled into Mediterranean gardens, hot water comes from solar panels, the pools are cleansed by copper/silver purification, air conditioning is low energy, olives and oranges are organically grown. Trails lead to quiet spots, swallows swoop above ancient olives and a 40-minute walk brings you to the colourful, multi-ethnic community of Órgiva, home to one of the biggest New Age scenes in Andalucía. Walk – or ski in the winter- in the Sierra Nevada, hit the beaches in Motril or spend a day exploring Granada.
