In little whitewashed Aracena: a jewel. Behind the Art Deco façade is a houseful of riches and light, orchestrated by Australian Melanie who has a background in design and a passion for Andalucia which she loves to share, happily organising trips for guests. Enter the elaborate arched portico: the effect is dazzling. A formal dining room frescoed in shades of light blue and gold, a central atrium painstakingly restored, and a sitting room cheerful and cosy with plush sofas and a music system that plays around the whole house. In the cellar bar: great cocktails and a chance to rub shoulders with the locals. Outside: elegant terraces with fabulous views of the castle and the iconic roofscape, and the best of local tapas generously laid out every night; bliss, too, to relax in the outdoor jacuzzi with a glass of champagne. As for the suites, all are vividly different and delightful – stylish sofas and chairs, patterned tiled floors, dramatic art on white walls, superlative towels and bathrobes. Choose 'Nobleza' for its presidential balcony, Castillo for its view. Amazing!
