There's no better way to explore Andalucia than on horseback… riding through rolling olives and vines, skirting the 'El Chorro' gorge, across the sierras and toward the mountains. Right in the middle of it all, this 200-year-old cortijo – and riding school – stands out as a big cluster of white, entered through a small door in large wooden gates and widening into a beautiful courtyard. A watchtower with claims to Roman ancestry surveys all. Famed doctor Fermin Garrido lived here… his presence remains and a stay here rejuvenates. The apartments are dotted all over, with rooms and galley kitchens simple and sweet, wooden candelabra-style lamps, Marie-Antoinette chairs, reclaimed oak pieces… The converted chapel is a remarkable communal space: a high vaulted ceiling, grand fireplace and chimney (designed beautifully for the space) and wooden spindle from yesteryear. Don't feel like cooking? A locally sourced 'table d'hôtes' style dinner (or breakfast) is available, and everybody eats together, in the British country-style kitchen, or on the shady poolside terrace.
