An oasis of exuberant greenery in Lanzarote's arid landscape bursting with colour and managed sustainably. Remote, alternative, welcoming

Rest mind and body in this delightful retreat of apartments and a Mongolian yurt. Warm, hospitable Daniel and Zanna are passionate about sustainable living: all is recycled or composted. In the compact bathrooms, showers are solar-heated and waste water filtered for the garden. And what a garden! An oasis of exuberant greenery in Lanzarote's arid landscape, it bursts with flowering shrubs, organic fruit trees and aloe vera amidst volcanic nooks and crannies. Laze around the pretty solar-heated pool (there's a sofa in the shade) or climb to the solarium for views of the Timanfaya volcano. Each light and airy open-plan apartment is different, with a simple kitchen and private terrace. Zanna's creative touch is evident in the natural design and flowing shapes of the houses, paths and cosy corners; prints, wall hangings and splashes of fuchsia and lime green. In the wood-floored Group Room, join in yoga or weekly meditation sessions; there are alternative therapies too. Amiable Bonnie the dog loves to be walked, and nearby beaches cry out to surfers and sunbathers; nature lovers will find plenty to explore, too.

"We had a fantastic stay at Amatista. It's sensitively designed with beautiful gardens, private patios and comfortable apartments. It's in a rural village in Lanzarote, ten minutes drive from a beautiful surfing beach, surrounded by lots of volcanic walking. It made a great base for exploring the island and Daniel and Zanna are helpful and friendly. Very relaxing!"

"I recently stayed in the beautiful Casa Amatista and found the whole experience fantastic. This was my first holiday abroad by myself and Daniel and Zanna made me feel comfortable and right at home - they were wonderful hosts. My accommodation was set slightly apart from the main resort, just a five minute walk away up on the hill and it was just what I was looking for for some time out of my hectic life. It was very well equipped and incredibly comfortable. I was very pleased I hired a car as the resort is set away from the touristy beaches (perfect!) but close enough to drive anywhere on the whole island. I took advantage of the therapies on offer and have left my holiday feeling totally grounded and calm - just the perfect tonic! Thank you Daniel, Zanna and Piret, the dogs were wonderful therapy too!"

"What a wonderful place for a holiday. We stayed here with our two small children. The accomodation was perfect, the surroundings beautiful (and great for exploring) and our hosts were fantastically welcoming - giving us some perfect tips on good beaches and visits for children. And the lovely pool was well used by all! Thank you very much!"

"We have just returned from a superb stay at Casa Amatista. The relaxed atmosphere in such beautiful surroundings was perfect. Daniel, Zanna and Piret could not have been more welcoming and helpful. We stayed two nights in the Bodega apartment and the remainder of our visit in the yurt. Both were delightful - beautifully decorated, very comfortable and extremely peaceful. We very much enjoyed the yoga classes every morning which Daniel and Zanna kindly tailored according to both our needs. Piret gives a wonderful massage. We made a couple of visits to beautiful nearby beaches but really found that the peace and tranquillity of Amatista was the best place to be. We enjoyed meeting the other guests - everyone seemed to be instantly relaxed by the gentle atmosphere. I couldn't recommend Amatista more highly and hope very much to return."

"Lovely place, great host's with time to help you make the most of your stay. Very accommodating for children and great to have the animals around for them. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and wish we could have made it longer! Will be back and recommending Amatista to our friends and family. Thank you Daniel, Zanna and Piret, xxx"

"We stayed here for just over a week. The stay was relaxing and enjoyable but if staying here for longer than 1-2 nights it is vital to have a car to get around as it is in the middle/north of the island and outside of the local village supermarket/restaurant. We had a hired-car and were able to visit all areas of the island with ease, which made the trip v enjoyable. Lanzarote can be very windy and cloudy at times and this is more noticable as you travel to the north of the island. Again this is something to consider as if it happened to be a cloudy day round where we were staying we could easily drive south for the day where the weather was generally sunnier. The accomodation is basic and comfortable. We stayed in the Yurt for most of our stay and was fun for the novelty factor and increased privacy, however (for those of you who have never stayed in a yurt before) there is no natural light in the yurt unless the door is open, so was quite dark despite the 2 bedside lamps. The grounds are beautiful and the 2 dogs are so lovely, and will accompany you for walks around the grounds, which we loved. They are very sweet natured animals. Daniel, Zanna and Piret were kind and easy going. It is self-catering and the kitchen was well equiped. I would definitely recommend casa amatista if: you are happy with self-catering, rustic accomodation, want to get back to nature and have a hired car to get around the island. There is actually a lot to see in Lanzarote, from the moon-like landscape to all the 'cesar manrique' related sites which were excellent. Beaches in papagayo were lovely but no showers. Playa blanca was the most authentic spanish resort area in the south and really nice to go for day trips. The seafood is excellent."

"This was the first time I had travelled abroad on my own so I was very anxious.Daniel and Zanna were very welcoming. They created a lovely balance between being inclusive but not intrusive. The place was so peaceful if offered real respite from a busy world. I also want to mention the volunteers who were staying at the time. They were very friendly and enhanced my stay.I will most definitely go back!"

"Wow! A beautiful green oasis surrounded by rugged mountains and vineyards. Our apartment was home from home, bright and so comfortable. The owners Daniel and Zanna are two amazing people who have created a very special and magical place."

"What a lovely place! I was looking for a peaceful retreat in the sun and found exactly that and more in Casa Amatista. I stayed in one of the rooms in the main house. The owners were very kind and made me feel at home straight away. I felt very safe and cosy. Able to relax completely. Something about the atmosphere of the place appeased me and I forgot all about work and rested incredibly well. Loved meeting all the other guests too. Casa Amatista seems to attract really open, kind people. Great homely atmosphere. Delicious veggies from the garden. Also loved taking long walks to the nearby volcanoes with the owners' super friendly dogs. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who needs a few restful days and some sunlight. I stayed a week and feel completely recharged!"
