Casita El Golfo
El Golfo,
Lanzarote
Canary Islands,
Spain
Waves crash on jagged rocks and striking jet black volcanic sand, but the emerald green lagoon rests unperturbed in its half moon bay. A short stroll away, this little white fishing village on Lanzarote's southwest coast is renowned for its fish restaurants and sleepy atmosphere; it's lively by day, but by 9pm there is sweet silence in the fresh, clean air. On a narrow lane off the main street, the traditional whitewashed cottage gazes out to sea from a little upstairs sun terrace. A cosy, uncluttered space for a family or couple, it centres on a large, shiny modern kitchen and an inner courtyard part-shaded from the sun. Outside steps lead up to a simple single room, ideal for an older child; the large bedroom-cum-sitting room has a double bed and a big comfy sofa. Charming British owners – artist and writer – run a teachers' association 25 minutes away near Timanfaya Park. Join them for Slow Food dinners and good conversation, and for tips on hikes, cycle rides, sea fishing and surfing at La Santa. This is a marvellous playground for active people, and a good place to rest and recharge.
