La Casa del Rector

An ornate jewel in the heart of Spain's hot, dry, central plain, historic Almagro flourished throughout the Middle Ages and was briefly the provincial capital. The town is one of the cultural treasures of the region – don't miss the galleried frontage of the lovely Plaza Mayor or the beautifully restored medieval open-air theatre, now a lively centre for dramatic arts. The Casa del Rector, a charming collection of 16th-century houses, was acquired some years ago by restaurateur Juan Garcia, who transformed it into a delightful hotel. Behind the sandstone façade, rooms open onto a galleried central atrium where water flows – a lovely place to unwind. Explore further and discover the new ultra-modern wing, part art gallery, part hotel, part spa. Choose your bedroom before you arrive: rustic chic or sophisticated modern. Most have sofas, wood-burning stoves and adventurous bathrooms, even a huge jacuzzi wth a roof that opens to the stars. Staff are young and friendly, breakfasts excellent with Manchegan cheese and charcuterie; for dinner, look no further than the owners' brilliant restaurant.
