The Experience

Send the children off to the Forest School, try their letterboxing and immerse yourselves in wildlife and rolling hills. This grand gothic house is home to the Bosanquet family, whose love of sustainable farming is inspiring.

They offer a barn conversion for two, with a little loft den (or bell tent) in the summer for children and grand-children. All ages love it here.

Raglan Castle is a ten-minute drive, the Forest of Dean half an hour, and the Brecons are just beyond. This is a foodie area so book lunch at The Bell at Skenfrith (about 10 miles), tour the vineyards of Ancre Hill (7 miles), and visit the Chapel in Abergavenny (12 miles). Then back for a stroll down the yew-tree walk, and a row on the wildlife-rich lake.

We spent a lovely weekend in Wood Barn. It was extremely peaceful and rejuvenating. We ordered Penny’s food in advance for the Friday night, spent Saturday letterboxing and didn’t have to rush to leave on the Sunday thanks to the late check-out. It was a shame the on-site shop was no longer open but this didn’t impact our stay!

A lovely weekend spent here with friends. The small well equipped kitchen and large dining/living area suited us very well. Walking on the grounds was a treat. The trail with clues, thoughtfully provided and beautifully illustrated, was challenging for grown ups so manage your children’s expectations… we took 2 hours to find the first stamp. We very much hope to return.

We've been coming to Old Lands for several years now. New things we noticed and enjoyed: Old Lands in its autumnal shades - this was the latest in the season we've visited; the 'night trail' - a great activity for when the nights are closing in; the very useful fence and gate by Stable Court which meant we could let our dog out of Stable Court without her heading off solo to explore the grounds; the additional 'jetty' on the lake - perfect for mooring to then collect conkers; new baby newts discovered during (and returned to pond after) pond dipping. Old Lands is a truly special place to stay.

We had a family gathering at Oldlands, and we had a wonderful time there. It is very comfortable and well set up, and we enjoyed using two of their rentals, often meeting in the middle for a communal meal on the outdoor table. We were lucky enough to have a tour by the renowned ecologist and entomologist Sam, who is rewilding the estate. I hope we will be back - I think they are doing amazing things there, and the surroundings were wonderful.

We stayed in Horseshoes for a week and loved it. A well-appointed, charming place to stay, lovely to have local produce in the shop onsite, a privilege to be able to roam the grounds and do the treasurehunt with the kids. Well located for excursions too

Becca, Oxford

I stayed in Stable Court for 3 nights and loved every minute of it! Everything was as perfect as advertised on their website. It was exceptionally clean and the spacious accommodation was equipped with everything I needed to make me feel at home! It was the perfect setting for me to go walking and to relax. Just what I needed. I highly recommend staying here! I will be back!!

Magical - what a privilege to stay at Old Lands. Not just lovely accommodation but a highly curated experience. My kids loved studying moths and pond dipping with Sam. They were captivated by his knowledge of insects. Letterboxing/Geocaching has us exploring woodlands and meadows far and wide. We loved boating on the lake. The shop was convenient and had quality supplies. The personalisation from beginning to end was first class. Old Lands is idyllic - a place where you truly unplug. The philosophy behind it leaves you thinking. It's not difficult to understand why people return again and again.

Our two families (5 kids and 4 adults) arrived at Old Lands dusty and bedraggled from a climb up Sugarloaf in the hot sun. Stable Court and Horseshoes unfurled themselves across a courtyard of flowers and butterflies and we all immediately felt like we’d come home (if home was ever that idyllic). Boating, nature walks, newt fishing, oak climbing, wild swimming in Skenfrith, early morning pyjama-clad trips to the honesty shop for delicious coffee…It’s a kind, thoughtful, detailed, kid friendly delight that brought out the best in us all.

A group of five of us have just spent a fabulous weekend in two cottages at Old Lands and absolutely loved it. We didn’t want to cook so chose from the extensive menu emailed to us beforehand and it was all waiting for us on arrival and none left over which speaks for itself! The cottages were both beautifully furnished, warm and comfortable, we were totally left to our own devices and felt welcomed. Ample parking, ample everything, I’d highly recommend this place to anyone and have done already, it’s remotenesses is a huge part of its charm and the attached shop has limited but good choice.

Jane, Thame

My 3rd stay at Oldlands and always a pleasure to be back. We love everything from the apartment (Stable Court) to the beautiful gardens and grounds to wander around, pick fresh green's from the walled garden and choose from a autumnal bounty found in the small but perfectly stocked onsite shop. We will definitely be back!

Claire, Market Harborough

We stayed in the Wood Barn with our dog. We had such a great time, loved the place! Beautiful Walled Garden, very interesting Nature Walk/Talk with owner Sam, nice little farmshop.

Suus, Twisk

We stayed at Stable Court and enjoyed one of our most relaxing holidays. The weather was incredibly hot, but the flat stayed cool and comfortable. Everything was peaceful, quiet and unhurried. The on site shop was very good.

Ann, Worcester

Love this place, we take the dogs and our young child and they absolutely love the freedom and wildlife, can’t recommend highly enough

Tim, Manchester

Absolutely perfect stay. We loved every aspect of our visit- the warm welcome, perfect accommodation, the nature walk, letterboxing. I’m sure we will be back and I’m not surprised they get so many repeat customers.

Lorna, Bristol

Wow! What a place. We stayed in Stable Court which has been beautifully converted with a lovely, spacious living area and comfortable bedrooms. We did feel that the lighting could be improved, both inside and out (maybe a PIR sensor for the stairs) but this minor quibble would certainly not stop us going back or recommending it to others.

William, Shrewsbury

Gorgeous barn conversion surrounded by stunning countryside and served by a shop that sells local honey that will make you forget your own name. The owners are friendly and helpful. The facilities are immaculate and the bees must be raised on champagne or something cause that honey really is wonderful. Three thumbs up!

Tony, LONDON

We and our three daughters families stayed in Horseshoes, Stable Court and Wood Barn. It was an excellent family holiday - especially for the grandchildren. Loads to do. Lovely place.

Jon, Studland

Wow - what an incredible place to stay. My daughter and I loved every moment of our time at Old Lands. Our accommodation was really comfortable, the grounds and the Walled garden are stunning and we were made so welcome. The countryside around Old Lands is beautiful and there is so much to do in the area. However, it's hard to drag yourself away from this magical place to go and explore the area. There are plenty of walks from the doorstep. My daughter and I definitely want to return with the rest of our family.

Penny, Reading

Old Lands was such a beautiful, calm and considered place. Very clean, pretty and ordered and yet wholesome and hearty. The shop is glorious and picking our own vegetables in the vegetable garden was wonderful. Great trees to climb and places to explore. We loved every moment of our stay.

Marissa, London

Old Lands is simply magical. A large slice of heaven in Monmouthshire. Beautiful old buildings, stunning grounds, acres of fields, a circular walk round the lake, more walks through the countryside and only 5 miles from Monmouth itself which is great for a mooch, a shop and some great cafes and bars. Children will love it. Our dogs certainly did! So did we!

Location

The neighbourhood

You may not have time to stomp up the Black Mountains or kayak down the river Wye as there’s so much fun to be had here, from following the fantastic Letterbox Trail to volunteering in the walled vegetable garden. Gwent Wildlife HQ is also in the grounds and on Mondays Sam hosts an ecological talk. You can roam the 200 acres, join a green gym session or nod off under a tree with a book. The on-site shop stocks pretty much everything – from eggs, meat and bread to sauerkraut, kimchi and more. For walkers, foodies and families, it’s perfect.

Local points of interest from Clare Bosanquet

  • Castles galore on the doorstep, it is border territory after all.
  • You can see the Wye valley from the wooded slopes above, or whizzing by as you tackle the white water in a canoe.
  • Our old industrial heritage is good too, if disappearing down a mine for the afternoon is your cup of tea.
  • Abergavenny as a foodie town with its annual festival is good place to find the best of our local produce.
  • Black mountains 20 minutes away, Brecons just beyond.
