It’s 170 years old but arty Christine and husband Don have converted half of their church-home into an Instagram-worthy studio and a cosy spot for couples.A huge open-plan space to lose yourself in, full of modern prints, retro furniture and luxury touches, all cleverly blended with original arches and big windows that give incredible light. An inspirational space to finish writing that book, a semi-rural romantic hideaway or a place to rest after walking the Somerset hills. If the sun is shining enjoy the treat Christine has baked for you in your own private garden with patio or warm your toes by the cosy wood-burner – there’s underfloor heating here too. The hot springs and Georgian architecture of Bath are close by, explore the Cathedral city of Wells or chuck your boots in the car for a day on the Mendip Hills.

This studio is stunning (and quirky too being part of a converted parish church). It certainly has the wow factor when you walk in! It is spacious, comfortable and well-equipped. One of the nicest things was waking up in the morning after a great night's sleep in a very comfy bed to complete tranquility (we live near busy roads and have planes going over!). There are pleasant walks nearby and Bath is easily accessible via the park'n'ride a short drive away. The hosts are just brilliant - friendly and welcoming. Christine's home-baked bread was delicious too!

We had such a lovely stay for New Year. A very lovely place, super comfy and loved cooking and settling down for a night in front of the log burner. Very well equipped, absolutely everything we needed and very well placed to visit lots of interesting attractions - Bath, Cheddar Gorge, Wells. A fabulous place we would highly recommend - thank you for your hospitality.

Sarah & tony, Harrogate

A beautifully decorated Christmas tree and home-made mince pies welcomed us to The Studio! Homely and comfortable, the studio wood burner made all the difference to making the place warm and cosy for our winter getaway. The kitchen had all we needed to make home-cooked meals and the location is great for exploring the local area for walks. The bathroom is small but perfectly formed with a good shower. A lovely quiet spot.

A warm welcome from the hosts including home-made muffins and a loaf of farmhouse bread. Great kitchen for home cooking. Beautifully peaceful - a calm and spacious studio in this unusual converted chapel. Fantastic wood-burner to enjoy on a cold winter's evening. Good walks nearby.

Very comfortable and spacious. Christine had thought of everything one needed and was most helpful....returning my iPad charger!

Margaret, Near hitchin, herts.

A hidden gem, where everything is so well thought out. Home bread and muffins were a lovely touch and we will be back.

A quiet and peaceful haven, far from the madding crowds. Inspirational decor and style, extremely well equipped for those who like to cook. High quality furnishings. Beautiful open plan room with fantastic log burner. Lovely shower /bathroom. Very private, not overlooked, and with its own little garden - beautifully kept. We have already booked our return visit - that's how much we loved our stay!

We were desperate to get away from the real world for a few days and looking for somewhere special to stay. The Studio was perfect. Being a converted church, it had a light and airy feeling and was deliciously cool (though could imagine settling down by the log fire with some of Christine's muffins on a chilly evening - or in winter after a walk in the beautiful countryside that's on the doorstep). We'd planned a quick visit to Bath but didn't get there. It was too tempting to just stay put and chill in the church! Good. We have an excuse to go back again.

Jan, Lynton

David and I stayed here whilst seeing our daughter at Bath university. It was bliss to escape the busy city of Bath but be just 8 miles away. Christine is a fantastic host, we loved the muffins and welcome pack she left us. Throughout the studio there are thoughtful little touches that make staying at the studio so enjoyable. We were so comfortable and relaxed we didn't want to leave! Christine was really helpful and informative about the area , which was very useful as we are not familiar with the area . We will definitely be back

The neighbourhood

The Studio is on the edge of the ex-mining village of Clandown and a short drive to farm shops and supermarkets. It’s worth a drive to sleepy Chilcompton (15 minutes) for the Redan Inn – a great food pub. Bath and Wells are a 20-minute drive and you can stride out on pleasant walks from the door across fields. The Mendip Hills are a 25-minute drive.

Local points of interest from Christine Last

  • Take a short drive to vibrant Frome, with cobbled streets and independent shops. Once a month the town centre is taken over by the Frome Independent Market - local artisan traders selling terrific food, fashion, vintage and crafts.
  • Explore dramatic caves and rugged limestone landscape of Cheddar Gorge, Wookey Hole, Mendip Hills – or stride (in wellies!) across lush farmland and rolling hills. Footpaths in every direction & you can walk for miles to blow the cobwebs away!
  • After a day’s sightseeing or shopping in Bath (the Christmas Markets are a 'must' in Nov/Dec), indulge in the warm, natural thermal springs at the Thermal Bath Spa, pamper yourself with a luxury treatment and float in the stunning rooftop pool at sunset.
  • For foodies, we can recommend some great local eating places, from friendly Italian trattorias and little farm cafes to cosy gastropubs and award-winning restaurants. Or, just stay at home and whip up a feast in the studio’s well-equipped kitchen.
  • Wander the quaint streets of Wells to find medieval gems and film locations, or visit Glastonbury Tor for a magnificent view. On a rainy day, there's the award-winning Somerset Coalfield Life Museum - fascinating exhibits on the area’s coal-mining history.
  • If you’re after peace and quiet, why not simply stay in and chill, curled up by a crackling log burner with a book or a film on Netflix. Or in the summer, enjoy a glass of wine in the garden and listen to the birdsong.
